Structure of the Carthusian Order

Carthusian monks
At the head of the Carthusian Order
is the General Chapter, which gathers every two years all priors.
Outside the General Chapter, the Order is led by the General, who is
elected by the community of the Grande Chartreuse and who is also
its Prior. Similarly, each individual community elects its own
Prior. The General Chapter and regular visitations of each house
insure the unity of the Order.
Carthusian nuns
The nuns also have their General Chapter, at which the General of
monks and those fathers who conduct visitations at the sisters’
houses are also present.
